What makes a good website for a local business

Six things that decide whether visitors turn into enquiries – explained plainly and without jargon.

Your website is often the first impression a new customer gets of you. And it's decided in seconds: stay or click away. These six points make the difference.

1. Say clearly what you offer

Anyone landing on your homepage should understand within a few seconds what you do, who it's for and where. One clear sentence above the fold beats any slogan.

2. One next step per page

Every page needs a goal: call, write, book an appointment. When visitors have to guess what to do, they usually do nothing.

3. Mobile first

A large share of your visitors arrive on a smartphone. Text must be readable without zooming, buttons big enough, and the contact form easy to fill in.

4. Load fast

Nobody likes waiting. Small images, lean code and good hosting make sure your page appears instantly – even on a weak mobile connection.

5. Make trust visible

Real photos, a face behind the business, your address, opening hours, a legal notice that is correct: small details show you're legitimate. Don't invent anything – honest statements are stronger than big promises.

6. Maintain it, don't forget it

A website is never "finished". Opening hours change, offers are added, technology must stay up to date. Regular care keeps you fast, secure and findable.
